Lactoferrin is a glycoprotein isolated from bovine milk and is a component of whey protein. It has multiple potentially beneficial effects. It helps in iron absorption and serves as a source of iron for infants. It may have antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. Due to its role in iron transport, it belongs to the group of proteins called transferrins.

Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, normal oxygen transport in the body, and normal cognitive function. Iron, folate, vitamin B12, and vitamin C contribute to the normal function of the immune system and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Vitamin C increases iron absorption and contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system.
Folic acid contributes to the normal formation of blood and maternal tissue growth during pregnancy. Additional intake of folic acid increases the mother’s folate level. A low folate level in the mother is a risk factor for neural tube defects in the fetus. The target group is women of reproductive age, and a beneficial effect is achieved by additional daily intake of 400 µg of folic acid for at least one month before and three months after conception.
